What this is

Alvdansen Chronicles is a living illustrated reader. I'm publishing it page by page — each spread is a hybrid of field-guide entry, illustrated diary, and graphic-novel fragment, organized around the Swedish alvar: the elves, but the elves of the limestone meadow and the midsummer dance, not the elves of contemporary fantasy.

The form is built to hold mixed source material — an AI-generated hero image, a hand-drawn botanical, a movement strip composed in ComfyUI — through a single cohesion pipeline so the whole reads as one artist's hand on one substrate. The substrate matters because this is also a print artifact: every spread exports to a print PDF, and select spreads become physical art prints.

Cultural lineage

The chronicle is anchored in the Swedish folkloric tradition — the illustrators John Bauer (Bland tomtar och troll, 1907), Carl Larsson (Ett hem, 1899), and the structural model of Carl Linnaeus's naturalist taxonomy. Bauer's misty pastel woods are the visual gravity well. Larsson's marginal decorations inform the ornament vocabulary. Linnaeus's plate-and-caption discipline shapes the field-guide spreads.

This is not pan-Norse pastiche. The contemporary-fantasy gravity well — runic dingbats, Celtic knotwork, fleurs-de-lis, torch-gold-on-deep-green — is explicitly out of register. This is also not Sámi-coded material. The alvar are a different cultural lineage; the Sámi tradition is theirs, not mine to draw on. Where the alvar's worldview touches questions of cosmic travel and the seam between worlds, I draw on the Swedish folkloric register specifically — not a generic-fantasy synthesis.

Where the source material falls outside what I can author from this position, it stays outside. The chronicle is not encyclopedic. It is one practitioner's reading of one tradition, slowly.

alvdansen.com vs alvdansenlabs.com

This domain — alvdansen.com — is the artist practice. It hosts the chronicle, the prints, and the practitioner's account of the work. It runs on its own infrastructure, its own visual register, and its own analytics property.

alvdansenlabs.com is a separate concern — the business side of my AI-and-illustration work. The two share an artist (me) but they don't share a voice, a customer, a register, or a footer. If you're looking for the labs, that lives at alvdansenlabs.com. The chronicle lives here.

Colophon

Built with Astro 6 + Cloudflare Workers Static Assets + R2 for image hosting. Typography is EB Garamond (display + body) and Inter (UI), both OFL-licensed and self-hosted via Astro's Fonts API. Image cohesion runs through a Python pipeline named chp: every published image carries a provenance manifest (recipe name, recipe version, source hash, processed-at timestamp). Print PDFs are generated via Paged.js. Print masters are exported through Affinity Publisher to Mixam US.

The chronicle is hand-tended. No subscription, no comments, no engagement metrics. RSS is the subscription path: /rss.xml.
